Oils and Liniments
Oils and Liniments have been in existence for thousands of years. They range from your basic feel good muscle rub to penetrating, target-specific formulas. A liniment is an alcohol-based formula, one in which herbs have been soaked in alcohol for an extended period of time. An oil is created in a similar manner, but no alcohol is used. Liniments absorb more quickly and generally have better penetration than oils.
Common muscle rubs tend to be oil based with menthol and/or camphor as the predominant ingredient. They are useful for overworked, exhausted muscles, general after-workout soreness or pain, or even for pre-workout warming of muscles (e.g.
Posumon Oil or Balm and Tiger Balm.)
Formulas with warming herbs are for older healed injuries or old-achy joints where the application of heat feels good. They are often helpful for old injuries that have been over-iced or are controlled through over-the-counter pain medications (e.g.
Red Flower Oil, Hong Hoa Oil, and Black Ghost Oil.)
Red and painful joints may benefit from formulas that contain cooling herbs (e.g.
White Flower Oil, Kwan Loong Oil, Woodlock Oil).
Several liniments are used frequently by martial artists, athletes and those who are intensively physically active.
